Rubik's Cube Solver

Enter your scrambled 3×3, we check it, then coach you through every turn on an animated 3D cube. Runs entirely in your browser.

1 Enter your colours

Hold the cube with the white centre on top and the green centre facing you. Pick a colour, then tap stickers. Each face of the net says how to look at it.

Notation cheat sheet

Each letter is a face. Turn it clockwise as if you were looking straight at that face.

UUp (top)DDown (bottom)
FFront (facing you)BBack
RRightLLeft

R quarter turn clockwise · R' (“R prime”) counter-clockwise · R2 half turn (either way).

On the 3D cube, green arrows mean clockwise, pink arrows counter-clockwise and yellow ×2 arrows a half turn. For D, L and B, “clockwise” is judged looking at that face. Seen from the front, D moves the bottom layer to the right.

How the solver works

We use Kociemba's two-phase algorithm via the open-source cubejs library.

  1. Phase 1 finds moves that put the cube into a special subgroup: every edge and corner is oriented and the middle-layer edges are in the middle layer.
  2. Phase 2 finishes the solve using only U, D, R2, L2, F2, B2.

Pruning tables keep this fast, typically 22 moves or fewer in a fraction of a second. Cubes 6 or fewer moves from solved get an exact shortest search first.

Before solving we validate the cube:

  • 9 stickers of each colour and six different centres
  • every corner and edge is a real piece, used exactly once
  • corner twist and edge flip add up
  • corner and edge permutation parity match

Learn it yourself: the beginner method

Hold white on top for steps 1–2, then flip the cube so yellow is on top.

  1. White cross. Bring the four white edges up around the white centre, matching each side colour to its centre.
  2. White corners. Put a white corner below its slot and repeat R' D' R D until it drops in.
  3. Middle layer. Line up a top edge (no yellow) with its centre.
    • To the right: U R U' R' U' F' U F
    • To the left: U' L' U L U F U' F'
  4. Yellow cross. Repeat F R U R' U' F'.
  5. Match edges. R U R' U R U2 R'
  6. Place corners. U R U' L' U R' U' L
  7. Twist corners. With the corner at front-right, repeat R' D' R D until yellow is on top, then turn U to the next corner.
